Dundee is a leading shopping destination and north east Scotland’s key centre for retail, with a complementary mix of national chains and independent retailers. Dundee has a compact city centre but has a regional catcment of over 430,000.  In 2022 Centre for Cities placed Dundee 4th-highest among all UK cities for footfall recovery.

Dundee has access to 90% of Scotland's population within a 90 minute drive-time. There are more than 40,000 students – giving Dundee one of the highest ratios of student to resident ratios in the UK, and with over 75 nationalities represented, the city is internationally diverse.

The pedestrianised high street offers a range of national chain stores including Marks & Spencer, Slaters, HMV, The Body Shop and Tesco Express. For a mix of food experiences, visit Reform Street –The Pancake Place; Scotland’s first ever McDonalds franchise and GDK – the restaurants first German kebab franchise in Scotland; the world's first TGI Fridays & Go takeaway alongside a mix of Indian street food, bars and cool coffee shops . Alternatively, Castle Street, Exchange Street offers a haven of independent shops, restaurant and cafes including Braithwaites Coffee and Tea Merchants, The Cheesery, Daily & Hard Grind, The Flame Tree, Vandala and The Selkie.  Union Street has replaced cars for street art and outside seating and includes many independents including Voyager, The Cannon and luxury jeweller, Walker the Jeweller.

The city is also home to two shopping centres: The Overgate, Europe’s only single sided mall with key high street brands including Next, New Look and Primark.  The Overgate was purchased by Frasers Group in 2023 – and The Wellgate, a value shopping centre which houses the city’s library.
